Perhaps you are correct. When I talked to the high-level techs at amazon, they were aware of all the kindles getting bricked by recent updates.

This update replaces a number of potentially damaged files with original copies, which in itself may "repair" some bricked kindles (if you can get the update onto the USB drive).
