This is the response I got from Kobo Support:

Hello Paul:

Thank you for emailing our Kobo Customer Care Team.

You said that you can no longer open any of your books on your Kobo Touch. Have you tried to do a basic reset on your device? To do a basic reset you would insert a paperclip in the hole on the back of the device. Then you would press till you hear a click, this will reset the eReader. Then try to open your books. If this does not work, you can do a factory reset on your device. To do a factory reset you would go to your SETTINGS, then to DEVICE INFORMATION, then to RESET TO FACTORY. Once the reset is done you will have to do the set up again. When you get the READ ON on your device, you would then plug it into your computer and it will say GET STARTED on your computer. Follow the prompts till it asks you to sign into your Kobo account. Then all your books will download again to your device and you should be able to open them.

Yours truly,

Lucie
Kobo Team

Hmm... of course, doing this loses all annotations, etc... so I opted for deleting each file one by one and then redownloading them. Back to normal now with a much pruned library of free titles.
