Like ivanjt said "The booting dots have NOTHING to do with the update, they happen after the update program runs and the system reboots."
These installations can sometimes be a little finicky.
Do NOT throw in the towel after one or two tries !!! You may want to try another USB drive or an SD card as well. There are plenty of users on this forum that will tell you first hand that these installs can be a real pain in the keister.

Are you using a USB thumb drive or a SD card? Some owners who had no luck with a USB drive went SD and it worked, or went from SD to USB and that worked.

The instructions from Entourage say to hold the MENU and ROTATE buttons for 10 seconds and after 1-2 minutes you should see the updating software message. Check out this thread:
