Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series is filled with characters who wield incredible power in the way you describe. Some of them are described as "Ascendants" or belong to an ancient species who can wield an Elder form of magic, etc. These characters routinely battle dragons (or even turn into dragons sometimes), use magically endowed weapons to destroy things, shatter mountains, create tectonic shifts, wipe out entire armies, and they have incredible duels with one another. In one book, one of these superhuman characters steps off the boat and as soon as his feet touch the earth...the entire city trembles and experiences this strange shock just from his very presence.
