Have to register?

My costumer/friend is going on a trip to Vegas and she asked me if I wanted something that's only available to the US and I immediately thought of the Nook. I bought a Kobo Touch, but I'm having so many problems with it (having to press the side 4-9 times before it turns the page, freezing, spontaneous "processing content," not loading books, ect) that I asked her to pick me up the Nook Simple Touch and I'd pay her back.

I want to check 2 things first
1)Do I have to register it to side load content? I have a ton of books that can be side loaded. I have no interest in setting up an account with B&N.

2) Kobo books work on the Nook? So I can buy future releases via a Canadian store.

Thanks for any responses.
