If you look at the circuit boards there isn't very much they can leave off and still have a working unit. A dumb terminal implies a computer that has everything but local storage in any volume and the EE doesn't have very much to start with.

They require all the circuits for the wacom enabled e-ink screen as well as the driving circuits for the LCD, the CPU, WiFi, some memory, charging control and the button control circuits. About the only things they could remove would be the USB and external SD card.

The above assumes they don't go for a complete redesign of the boards but then they would end up with almost the same components unless they used something like the RaspberryPi as the base unit but then again they would need some screen driver circuits and WiFi.
