For black-and-white it is 1600x1200. For color the color filter is applied and each color pixel is a combination of 4 sub pixels. So it is 800x600 in color mode. That's it.
Talking about colour mode may be a bit misleading as the screen only has one mode whether it's displaying black and white, colours or both, but you're right that the resolution of coloured areas is sort of 600x800. Luckily if you're looking at something like comics it doesn't really matter. The black "ink" lines and text are still nice and smooth and sharp using the full 1200x1600, and the filled colour areas can be pixelly but we're used to seeing colour print like that in newspapers and comics (halftoning - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halftone) so to me it looks fine.
