I have several Android smartphones (love the Samsung Nexus S and Sony Xperia Ray) and an iPhone. I've also got a couple of iPod Touches. Plenty of duplication there. Really, it's just a matter of whether you want one strongly enough to spend money on it or you don't.

As I mentioned earlier, for me, the deciding factor was battery life (or lack thereof on my smartphone). When I use my smartphone during the day, it's already drained by night time (or if not, will become drained next morning) so I'm left with nothing to use. Since I normally do most of my reading at night just before going to bed, I decided to get an iPod Touch so I have something to read on (specifically, on Stanza) while charging my phone. For me, that was a compelling enough reason to spend money on an iPod Touch.

On an Apple forum, you'll find plenty of fanboys who think any iOS device is the best thing since sliced bread.
