Girl Genius is one of my personal favourites (I have some of the original issues from before they switched to web publication and buy the GN collections) and it's a really fun look at a world run on mad scientist antics.

The official motto of Transylvania Polygnostic University is "Know Enough to Be Afraid", a sentiment which I heartily endorse as a guiding principle.

And if you decide to pick up the novel version later, it's cheapest (and DRM-free MultiFormat) over at Baen, which usually has the best prices for Night Shade's stuff at $6 compared to the 9.99 list/7.99 discount that most places have them, and they should be able to sell worldwide.
