I started the dragon lance saga like that some years ago, I started with the War of Souls, which at the time was the termination of the saga then I had to backed up and started at the begining. Let me tell you its a lot easier to start at the begining rather than the ending and understanding what is going on. So on that level some planning is needed such that I start at the bening rather than at the ending. I typically use fantasticfiction.co.uk for that as they have a very simple way of dividing the books authors have written into series.
I find inserting the series info from fantasticfiction.co.uk into Calibre is very helpful, too. In addition, I use "To Read" and "Read" tags in Calibre but I only mark the first book in a series (or the first book I haven't read in that series) as "To Read".
