Possible to control auto-number generation of folder numbers?

When a new book is imported into the calibre Library, the book is recreated in a new set of folders by Author and again in the Sub folder, by book title, which has a serial number in brackets, at the end of the title name. This particular number seems to be auto generated and irrespective of whether a book has been deleted from the library, the count does not maintain the actual number.

For eg: If I already had 5 titles by Wilbur Smith in the library, then in the Sub folder under the Author's name, I would have 5 titles serially numbered. Now if I delete one of these books from the Calibre Library, and re-add it again, instead of the number reappearing as the one that was deleted, the serial number is regenerated as 6. So if, for instance I deleted title number 3, if I re-add the title again, I would have titles with serial numbers 1,2,4,5,6.

The reason I am asking if I can control this number generation is because, sometimes, the epubs I add into the library have meta data that needs to be edited outside of the library for errors, which are apparent only after I add them the first time. So I delete the added title, reedit the opf in the original epub file and then re-add them again.

Would like to know if there is some way the user gets to control how the serial numbers are generated
