I've already started the book and the first chapters follow along pretty closely to the film so far.

In my opinion that makes you lucky as it would be a lot more enjoyable reading the book without knowing what all happens.

The film wasn't really "scary" per se, not like a horror film or even a really scary thriller (like Silence of the Lambs). The atmosphere is cool and creepy (a foggy island that houses an asylum for the criminally and violently insane) but I'd say the film is more creepy mystery-thriller than horror-thriller, with a few jolts here and there.
