But how about the engineers and naval security that directly interacted with them, the people who were blown about by the cloaked ship (and must surely have called the authorities), etc? Why was there no record of weird happenings in 20th century San Fransisco that some future historian would have looked at and said, "That's gotta be Jim Kirk and his bunch... they're always pulling stunts like this!"?

Star Fleet should have immediately gotten on the subspace channels and said: "Kirk! You're late going back to the past for those whales history says you stole! Get cracking, son!"
