I think I have it... When you go into data transfer mode, is the screen showing the home page or is it showing the picture of a computer connected to the reader?
Before you connect the T1 to the computer, wake it up from sleep mode and hit the home button. Then pug in the USB cable. That will properly put it into data transfer mode when you hit the button.
This is a guess, but it could be the problem.
