Would it help if I said it really is an arithmetic question (not a maths question, or some pseudo-artithmetic sequence*). That is, the rule for the sequence is simple, and only involves two of the four basic arithmetic functions. (i.e. two out of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
However, it is a sequence I haven't seen discussed a great deal.
* i.e. it's not something like numbers in alphabetical order, or by length in roman numerals. It is the numbers that define the sequence, not some odd property of the numbers.
