I am going to go to Science Fiction.. and the character that has always stood out for me was Thomas Orley from David Brin's Startide Rising.

He goes on a mission he knows is likely one way... to essentially bait a trap for one of the galactic races that are trying to find the crew of his human/dolphin ship. Then, after that, decides to bring a mess more galactics down on his head to buy the ship some time to escape. All the while, he plays species against species and manages to be the last man standing after a major battle royal.
