Download Kindle Previewer and open your ePub with it. This will automatically convert your ePub to a .mobi file (without a TOC).
If this doesn't look any better than the Calibre conversion, open the ePub with Sigil, have a look at the stylesheet and delete all font references before converting it with Calibre.
