Since the screensaver update did something, I would start with the assumption that the jailbreak worked. I suggest trying a few other screensaver images (e.g. from
Reading is FUN-damental) and reinstalling the same update_ss_0.25.N_k3g_install.bin as before. No need to uninstall first, see
