Trouble with Gen3, tried downgrading

Hey all, My wife has had a Gen3 Cybook for a long time, and recently its been freezing and the battery has been dying over one night (like its stuck on)
400mhz, 512meg storage.

She bought a new kindle, but I wanted to just restore this one to factory state, and the wiki suggested formatting the internal memory with fat32. So I did that and seems the freezing is gone, but now I can't put any books on it, it can't find any. Its constantly asking me to select the language and sometimes the case colour? It never saves it.

I tried also in the wiki to load the 796fmt firmware just to perhaps let it wipe it clean and restore a factory state, but no matter what I do I can't load that firmware. I can load the 2.1, or 1.6 firmwares all day but it won't downgrade to that one. It ignores the file.

Can anyone help me get this going again?
