I actually dont think these pre-orders are mistakes. I've only had the Kindle a couple of months, but I've seen a couple of these as free, or like the recent George Pelecanos release, for .99. Several of the free pre-releases have been with bonus material for next in a series. Don't know for sure what the marketing strategy is, but in this case for a major release for a first-time author, maybe they want the numbers high out of the gate and it's a cheap add-on to sending out lots of reviews copies?

Anyway, it's fun to find one of the "Big 6" books for free...
