If that were the case, though, there would be no pest problems on submarines... and there are. One of the areas that pests like to be in the most is food storage areas, and you can't easily poison / irradiate / expose to vacuum those without harming the food.

At, say, a Star Trek: The Next Generation level of technology, where you no longer have to store food as food, but simply create it from raw matter on demand, you could probably get rid of pests. If you're dealing with, say, a Firefly level of tech, though, you'll still have them.
