Discharging reader

Following some advice on a thread here Sorry can't remember who or where)
I have been using my reader after the battery bar shows empty.

This is the end of day 3 and the reader for the most part still works even though the battery symbol reports it is empty.

Biggest downsides are that it has to go through the opening book process when I turn it on and my insane desire to recharge it.

I have read 5 books and several short stories in this time, probably 12 hours of usage since battery showed empty. This I kind of incomprehensible to me.

I am carrying on in the hope that this will reset the battery meter, but not understanding the reason behind this behavior.

When I received the reader (Christmas gift) it would not turn on. Charged overnight with Sony charger and it worked fine. 6 days maximum usage with WIFI off before battery meter said empty. Usually started going to shut down as opposed to sleep mode on 1/4 battery meter so I would recharge then.

Was that way before firmware update and fully charged before firmware update. Same behavior.

I guess I should just take it back but hate to do that with a gift.

Sorry to rant on so, but I am confused and befuddled.
