I could immediately think of three scenarios:
1. You want to switch your provider but at the same time keep your old phone to save the few bucks needed to buy a new phone.
2. You are out of cash and want to sell your phone on eBay.
3. You feel somehow cheated by knowing that your phone is "crippled"
