Personally, I have my own domain name, so I never have to change my address.
By having your own domain name, you control your address forever (for all intents and purposes).
Well worth the ~$10 a year, and it gives me an essentially unlimited number of addresses to give to family, or to use for spam protection.
Note by using an email address tied your provider, if you ever change providers for any reason, you will lose that address.
Even if you do want to keep your Windstream.net address, no, you would not have to use a gmail.com address. You can configure Gmail to fetch mail from your current system, and to send mail with your current address.
