Possibly two reasons:

1) When the devices were designed and built - the panels were still a lot more expensive than they are now.

2) Sony/Amazon etc. have been designing the devices for maybe 2/3 years, the team need to be paid and the bills need to be paid and there are the materials as well, not forgetting any panels broken by the R&D stages. the companies have a lot of units to sell before they can break even on the bills for the creation of the device. And if they cannot make the departments profitable they will get shut down. Someone has to pay for the R&D stage and that is the early adopters - us I'm afraid (always has been; always will be)

Wait a while longer, the prices will come down...
