No, you don't need MobiPocket Reader on your computer in order to download books onto the computer. You only need MobiPocket Reader if you want to
read the books on your computer. I download books on my hubby's computer directly from the web--no reading software on his computer at all.

Yes, being able to read a book on your computer is a good backup for the Kindle. I'm strongly considering getting one of those ultra small PCs and then I can read in the dark since those have back-lit screens. Having the same book on the Kindle as a small computer seems like an easy way to be able to read in almost every condition.
