Dickens wasn't that keen on the US either. It seems to have been that old issue - Copyright. He rather felt that he should have been paid something for his books by American consumers and said so on his first trip to the US. The American public opinion whipped up by the press was that he should be grateful that he was being read and that expecting payment was pure greed. Dickens' resulting disillusionment comes over loud and clear in American Notes and Martin Chuzzlewit.
