As netboy pointed out , there is a wifi icon to the left of on/off sliding switch. Actually the switch (slide is in centre) and can slide left (to wards wifi icon) when nothing discernible seems to happen, and right towards on/off icon when the unit powers on.
I also noticed in the device info a MAC address, but am confused by a Set Mac button .
Thanks to Lubib's hint got the micro SD card operational.
