If you ever decide to go down the "hacking" route, there is no need to purchase *new* device. You are going to blow warranty anyway opening the device, so why not buy a second-hand one.
Yes that's a good point about second-hand. I imagine you have to be prepared to fork out for more than one device before it's finished.
