Actually, 2001: A Space Odyssey is fairly unique. Kubrick and Clark co-wrote the screenplay using Clarke's short story 'The Sentinel' as inspiration. As the screenplay progressed, Clarke wrote the novel and expanded on the concept. Neither is really an adaptation of the other.
