I've never read the book, so I don't know if the film did it justice, but the film is one of my favourites: Barry Lyndon, directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1975

And that brings to mind 2001 : A Space Odyssey...

Or the Russian film, Solaris...again in space, and again a bit surreal in parts...
