Your last hint was all I needed. When I suggested Sir Edmund Hillary my next guess if that was wrong was going to be Ernest Rutherford (born in New Zealand). You preempted that with the statement that the answer yo were looking for was not a person. Thinking about Rutherford gave me an idea for a science question that I think should not prove impossible.
