True, but they did have Client States in the mid-east:

Perhaps, if the term had a more exact definition, the Soviet Union's deep
and continuing involvement with a number of mid-eastern states, would not
be technically "Client States", but they certainly had and still maintain a
relationship that mandates some understanding of the languages in that
area of the world.
