Really only a novelette of 35,000 words.
This has had an attempt at "updating" for a post WW2 reprint, badly done. A character Frank Alwin is dscribed in one place as having spent 3 war years in the OSS, and elsewhere in almost the same words 3 war years in the Department of Justice. The novel dates from 1929, which rules out the OSS.
Also, the banknotes involved are sometimes $100 bills, sometimes $1,000 dollar bills. One hundred dollars was a lot of money in 1929, not so much in the 60s. Again, I think a bungled update. Unfortunately, I don't have a pre-war edition for comparison, to fix this up fully.
I changed the reference to OSS back to Department of Justice for consistency, otherwise made no changes.
A fast moving tale of a complex religion-based swindle in New York, with cops Peter Corelly and Wilbur Smith (yes), as well as ex-Departmen of Justice operative Frank Alwin in pursuit of the enigmatic gang.
