I'm reading
Desert Wives now. It is largely a rant in the guise of a murder mystery against Mormons and the polygamy enclaves that actually exist in Arizona and Utah, and the failure of law enforcement in those states to really do anything about it. It also describes -- repeatedly -- the abuse some polygamists impose upon women and young girls and the brainwashing that is done, all with the collaboration of local law enforcement. Makes me wonder if the author didn't have a direct, bad, personal experience.
The book is decently written, not great, and will not ever be considered one of the best mysteries of any week let alone year, decade, or century. For 99 cents, it gets 3/5 stars. For any price point higher than 99 cents it gets 2/5 stars. You aren't missing anything worth worrying about.
