Try converting it from epub to epub in Calibre. (Yes, epub to epub.) What has happened to me is the individual .xhtml files inside the epub, get too large for the Sony. Desktop readers, Sigil, even Calibre read it fine, but the Sony doesn't like it.
If you convert it in Calibre, it will break the chapter files into a reasonable size.
