I've always found the Ultramarines to be a bit starchy really, but love Grey Knights and Soul Drinkers novels. You can't go wrong with the Space Wolves omnibus as a start point though as it provides TONS of detail on creating the Astartes.

I still have the original edition GW novels of Space Marine, Inquisitor and the Deathwing omnibus. Classic older WH40K fiction.

The problem, like all franchise stuff, is that there are not many really good novels, so you have to fossick through the chaff to find the wheat.
