The Kindle is actually quite useful for users interested in learning foreign languages that use the Latin alphabet, because it comes with free monolingual dictionaries for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Portuguese, which are downloaded on demand when you look up a word in a non-English ebook (as long as it has the correct language metadata).
Since the Kindle format is based on the Mobipocket format, you can also install pretty much any Mobipocket dictionary by simply copying it to the document folder.
As for foreign language books, you can find free foreign language public domain books all over the Internet. If you cannot find Kindle books, simply search for ePubs and open them with the PC Kindle Previewer, which will automatically convert them to the Kindle format.
