preparing scanned books before PDF-ing

I have a bunch of scanned books (two-page images) that need to be split into one page per image files and then joined into a PDF document. Does anyone know of a software that can do this efficiently (maybe automatically)? I've tried Scan Tailor, which looks very promising, but is not finished yet (I cannot save the result). Is there any other similar software?
