The Ciaphas Cain novels are great, as are the Space Wolves, Grey Knights and Word Bearers. I am nearing the end if the Horus Heresy (The Outcast Dead), but will be going back to the Imperial Guard series soon.

I don't play and never have but I love the setting due to the obsessive detail. The Hammer & Bolter e-magazine is a good read for more background.
