Yes, you can open and read a PDF (with the limitations you state above) on the K4NT, but you can't download a pdf to your Kindle using the browser. If you try you get this message:
Web Browser cannot download this kind of file. Only files with the extension .AZW, .PRC, .MOBI, or .TXT can be downloaded to your Kindle.
