You can use any e-reader that uses the e-pub format to borrow e-pub books from your local library. That includes the Nook, and also the Kobo Touch, Sony PRS-T1 etc.
You will also need to download and use the Adobe Digital Editions software (although I think with the Sony PRS-T1 you can download the book directly to your ereader and don't need the Adobe software on your computer, not sure that's the case with the Nook or Kobo - though I may be wrong?).
Since you are in the USA, you should be able to download Kindle ebooks from your local library though?
