My biggest problem is powering up. Maybe one time in ten when I use the switch, it powers up. I mostly try just a straightforward pull the switch across all the way and release, which I believe is the correct way to use it, and there is no response at all. I usually wait 30 sec. between attempts, just to make sure there is adequate time for the device to respond, and nothing. If I slide the switch across slowly, sometimes the light will come on before the switch has slid all the way across, and I can release it there and it powers up fine.
I can generally get it to go into sleep mode, but if I pull the switch all the way to the end, it usually flashes into sleep mode for a second and then wakes back up again. I'm just pulling it straight across and releasing immediately in this case, which as far as I can tell is the proper way to put it into sleep mode. And it rarely powers down. Whether I pull the switch and wait for it to power down, or pull the switch and hold for 3 or 5 or 10 seconds, no response. Again, I'm waiting 30 sec. between attempts, so I'm sure the device has plenty of time to respond. And on the rare occasions when it does power down, it takes less than 5 sec. of holding the switch.
Since I can do what seems to be the same thing 10 times in a row and only get a response once, I would say it's a problem with the device, not my expectations from it. Powering up should be pretty straightforward, but it definitely isn't a matter of "pull power-button and release quickly to wake up from sleep"; more like pull power button, release quickly, wait 30 sec, try again, hope it responds this time, spend 2+ minutes just trying to get the device to turn on. If it were just a matter of it being difficult to switch off, then yes, I would just set it to power off after 5 mins of inactivity. That's not the issue here, or at least, not the only issue.
