Walmart, not using any personal identification such as Amazon ( member sign in) and Costco ( member number), can not find you on a computer and so it means you have to hang onto the receipt until the warranty period is over. I used to think that they would at least give a Walmart card for the amount if it was in the period but if they no longer carry the product, you are out of luck.
I asked at walmart, but even the return service manager said you have to prove it. No big deal, just thought someone might have heard how Amazon handles it.

I think you will be fine buying from Walmart. If anything happens within 15 days Walmart will exchange or refund your purchase price, although I don't know how they would handle the $50 gift card. After 15 days all I can say is it's a Kindle, and Amazon will stand behind it during the 1 year warranty period regardless of where you bought it.
You can also buy a Square Trade warranty which is relatively inexpensive and extend that protection to 2 years including accidental damage protection. This is sold on Amazon's website:

Most of the reviews for SquareTrade on Amazon's website are either 4 or 5 stars. They have a lifetime feedback on Amazon of 96% Positive from 27,000 + customers.
