I found the 10-book-per-year rate a little humorous when I read it too, and there have been lots of comments about it.

But over the years, I've met lots of people from lots of different walks of life that exclaim, "Who has time to read a book?" when I expressed surprise that they haven't read a book in months (or years). And that was even true before the daily bombardment of information from the internet started.

So I will agree that it's sad. But given the state of reality in humanity, it's probably a reasonable metric.
