Like a lot of folks who posted, we have more than 1 computer.
My portable lives next to my bed, and it gets powered up as needed. The same with my wife's netbook --which sleeps next to her end of the sofa.

The desktop behemoth runs on a Linux-based OS and is on almost all the time. EXCEPT when a storm is forecast. Then everything gets shut down, and the wire to the phone company gets unplugged from the back of the DSL modem. We have abrupt, sometimes quite violent electrical storms here, and I'm tired of replacing equipment. . .

BTW, wannabee: Any story that contains the line
