UPDATE: Sony seems to have addressed this issue in a firmware update. Now, instead of the screen going blank, it just refuses to zoom any further. A lot of good that does.

There is a new app called Orion Viewer, designed for e-ink devices, that does everything Sony's software does (except autocropping, but I hope the developer will add this feature soon).

In many ways, Orion is superior to Sony's software. It is more configurable, it has some extra features, and can be used with popular dictionary apps such as ColorDict and Fora, which means being able to use custom dictionaries.
