I'll throw in a recommendation for Fred Saberhagen's "Dracula" series. The series went on for many years, coming to ten books or so by the end, but my favorites are:

The Dracula Tapes is Dracula retelling the story of Stoker's novels from his point of view. Very rewarding to read this and Stoker's novel together.

The Holmes-Dracula File has Holmes on a case in which Dracula becomes involved.

An Old Friend of the Family, where Dracula is called on by a human family whose line he's friends with when one of their children is kidnapped.

I'll also throw in with the recommendation of Let the Right One In. I'll note, though, that the story is somewhat painful reading early on -- the abuse that the protagonist's schoolmates inflict on him is quite awful.

It's not strictly a "vampire book" per se, but John Ford's The Dragon Waiting is an excellent alternate history fantasy novel, and some of the major characters are vampires.

I may have missed someone mentioning it, but Le Fanu's story "Carmilla" is excellent, and should be on any vampire fan's reading list.

Kim Newman's Anno Dracula is another alternate-history fantasy... this one of a world where Stoker's band failed in their mission to destroy Dracula, and he married Queen Victoria, leading to an England in which vampires are out in the open, and it's become fashionable to become a vampire. I believe there are two sequels, but I've never picked them up, I'm afraid, even though the first book was quite good.
