OK - well I bought 4 books today as the kindle price drop monitor program spotted that they'd gone from £4 each to 90p each. {amazon's pricing strategy seems o be roll a dice, occasionally...]

here is the sequence which failed x 4 for me:

1. buy book from amazon.co.uk , download it to Kindle for PC
2. open kindle for PC folder, find the book & drag/drop into main calibre window

The author then appears in calibre as last name,first name
ticking/unticking the box on add books preferences for swap first & last name has no effect on the above.

( In Kindle for PC , [home page ]the author name is shown correctly

So do I need to use a different import method or change a different preference somewhere - either in the plug in or in the main calibre program?
