Pictographs is the word for every form of writing where pictures are used to represent words including hieroglyphs, ancient Mesopotamian languages, ancient Mayan, and ancient and modern Chinese and Japanese. At least in theory, eInk displays are capable of rendering pictographs as well as phonetic lettering.
